I- Assignment
To assist the Technician in the performance of routine laboratory and field operations.
II- Function
To undertake the daily work activities assigned by the appropriate person, Technician, Senior Technician or Head, either on site or in the laboratory as directed and in accordance with work requirements.
III- Aims of the Job
To carry day to day sampling and testing of construction materials in the laboratory and associated field operations in a proper and safe manner in accordance with specified and defined procedures and working practices.
IV- Reporting
Directly to Technician or if otherwise specified to Senior Technician, or Head of the division.

VI- Duties and Responsibilities (other duties may be assigned)
- Maintains the location and condition of the laboratory equipment as per the Inventory schedule and as directed by the Technician.
- Maintains the laboratory equipment as directed by the Technician.
- Cleans the laboratory equipment, tools and benches at the end of each test
Sets-up , adjusts and operates with care the following laboratory equipment :
- Thermometers (Min. / Max. and various hand types)
- Measuring equipment (rulers, beakers, flasks, trays, calipers)
- Sieves (all types)
- Sieve shaker
- Capping equipment
- Compression testing machine
- Length comparator
- Laboratory trial mixer
- Standard ovens
- Hot plates
- Microwave ovens
- Balances (above 2 kg capacity)
- Density and Soundness baskets
- Vibrating table
- Impact test machine
- Core drilling machines
- Field density by Troxler or Sand cone
- Sand equivalent apparatus
- Unit weight buckets (all sizes)
- Slump cones
- Concrete cylinder , cube, and beam moulds
- Cement cube moulds
- Air meters (pressure and volumetric)
- Splitting tensile strength apparatus
- Electrical sawing machine
- Marshall / CBR apparatus
- Unconfined compression test apparatus
- Rebound- hammer apparatus
- Proctor and CBR moulds
- Marshall moulds
- Other equipment as directed
- Carry the following physical tests and compute results where appropriate :
- Sieve analysis
- Flakiness and Elongation
- Fineness modulus
- Water absorption
- Specific gravity
- Density (compacted and uncompacted)
- Sand equivalent
- Proctor sample preparation and compaction
- CBR sample preparation and compaction
- Marshall sample preparation and compaction
- Cylinder and core capping
- Concrete and rocks samples : cutting and trimming
- Cubes, cylinder, and block crushing
- Sampling of concrete on site
- Testing slump, unit weight, air content and temperature of concrete in the field.
- Making and curing concrete cylinders, cubes and beams in the field
- Weigh materials and proportions as needed for concrete trial mix or other tests.
- Sample aggregates, sand, backfill and base course materials from pits and quarries
- Sample top soil for chemical tests
- Sample soil for Proctor, CBR and other soil tests
- Test asphalt content using centrifuge apparatus
- Test for Rebound-Hammer and record results
- Moisture content
- Aggregate unit weight
- Materials Finer than 75mm
- Coring
- Record test results on standardized forms or approved draft formats
- Report equipment errors or malfunctions to Technician, Senior Technician or Head.
- Follows Quality System procedures as directed by the Technician.
VII- Co-operation and Contact
With Quality Assurance auditors from the company and from other auditors as directed by the Technician, Senior Technician or Head of the division.
With representatives from the Consultant, contractor and all companies and firms associated with provision of goods or services to the company, as directed / agreed by the Technician, the Senior Technician or the Head of the division.
II- Qualifications
- Education and Experience :
No prior education, experience or training.
- Language Ability: (Arabic / English)
Ability to read a limited number of two- and three-syllable words and to recognize similarities and differences between words and between series of numbers. Ability to print and speak simple sentences.
- Math Ability:
Ability to add and subtract two digit numbers and to multiply and divide with 10's and 100's. Ability to perform these operations using units of money and weight measurement, volume, and distance.
- Reasoning Ability :
Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form. Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.
IX- Working Conditions and Fatigue
- Work Environment :
While performing the duties of this job, the assistant technician is frequently exposed to wet/dry/humid condition, moving mechanical parts, high, precarious paces, fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals, outside whether conditions, extreme cold, extreme heat, risk of electrical shock, risk of radiation and vibration. The noise level in the environment may be very loud.
- Physical Demands :
The assistant technician is regularly required to stand, walk, use hands to finger, handle or feel, reach with hands or arms and talk or hear. He is frequently required to climb or balance, stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl and taste or smell. He is regularly required to lift up to 20 kg and occasionally up to 50 kg. The vision requirements include close vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus.
